Entry 1: The Birth of a New Objection

Hi, everyone. I'm Minae Matsukawa, and I'm the producer of the "Ace Attorney" series for the Nintendo DS.

It's hard to believe that 2 years have passed since the first Ace Attorney game went on sale on October 11, 2005, but thanks to all of you, the series has gotten off to an outstanding start.

This time, to celebrate the all new "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney", made exclusively for Nintendo DS, I'll be passing along a few tidbits of information and sharing some amusing incidents with you to pass the time until it hits the shelves. I hope you'll enjoy the stories I have to tell.

Now then, on with the show!

The first game, "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney", has now sold over 100,000 units in North America. However, at first, it only sold ? units. I think you'd agree that wasn't a lot. I remember feeling a bit down at the time because there wasn't much in the budget for advertising, and our branch office in America kept telling me, "We can't do very much promotion-wise on this kind of budget! We can only afford to do this and this, but not that." Oddly enough, however, after "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" went on sale, it quickly sold out, and it was all thanks to you. It really was you, the fans, who were saying, "This game's really interesting!" and "It's awesome!!" and "You've gotta buy it!" all over the internet that sold this game to the world. I can't read English very well, so I used translation programs to read the reviews that people posted, and when I did, I was really touched by all the things you had to say! At the time, we were a little slow in reprinting the game... and I saw that PW:AA was going for some pretty high prices on various auction sites. I also saw many "I can't find this game anywhere!" comments. Whenever I saw one of those, I called up our American branch and told them, "Objection! We need to reprint this game again!" Reprint after reprint, the game eventually sold over 100,000 copies, and soon, it will have sold over 150,000 copies.

Speaking of "Objection!"...

This is an incident that really happened at one of our meetings when the North American staff and the Japanese staff got together to discuss the game.

"So, do we get to do some yelling?" an American staff member asked.
"E-Excuse me?"
I had absolutely no idea what they meant.
"You know -- the mic! I would love to be able to yell into the mic!"
His blue eyes sparkled with the idea but he was dead serious.
All of a sudden, the other Americans joined in.
"Yeah! You've gotta make it so that people can yell in this game!"
What else could I do but emphatically answer, "OK! We'll do it!"?

But at the time, we had absolutely no plans to use the mic, let alone words such as "objection" to vocalize, and so, just as I had feared, when I brought this idea home with me, the director and game planners became riled up like a mad hornet's nest. Their opinion was along the lines of, "We've got the regular buttons and the touch screen inputs already. Why do we need to use the mic, too?" to which I answered, "Because the staff overseas said that they want to be able to yell into their DSes! And they're really serious about this!!" The day ended with us basically going nowhere. (I've heard since then that some of the R&D staff who were there during this infamous director - producer scuffle were rooted to the spot trying to figure out which one of us to side with.)

When the idea to bring this game overseas was proposed, there were very few people even within the company itself who were willing to support it. When you think about it, this title wasn't just a small title - it was a really niche title. But I thought the game was really interesting, and just knew that we'd make a lot of people happy, if only they had the chance to play it. It was then that I thought to create this opportunity.

That's why when Ben Judd, who was the Localization Team's leader at the time, told us that people would like to have the microphone feature, and when during T.V. conferences, the North American staff asked if we were including that feature, I made sure to strike a balance and aggressively espoused our own ideas and our style of play. After all, I also understood the R&D team's feeling of not wanting to include anything frivolous very well. I had received two orders from the very man who gave birth to the Ace Attorney series, Mr. Takumi himself: Don't force features into the game that don't belong, but at the same time, make sure that whatever we end up doing will make the North American players happy. Two weeks later, we were able to create something that fulfilled both requirements - the ability to activate voice recognition by press the Y Button when the player him/herself wanted to yell out loud.

"This is great!" I thought to myself the very first time I laid my hands on that new build of the ROM. It truly was perfect. People who wanted to use only the buttons and touch screen could play as they wished, and those who wanted to be a bit more vocal could yell to their hearts' content. Papa Takumi had done it. He had created a new "Objection" for players overseas.

A few days later, Ben Judd, the one who pushed for the microphone feature to begin with, declared, "I'll be Phoenix's English voice!" and proceeded downstairs to the company's sound studio where he yelled, "Objection! Objection! Objection!!" over and over again. He must have done over 100 takes for that one word alone. *laugh*
Objection! Objection!!」

I'd love to tell you more about the voice acting in the overseas versions, but I'll save that for next time.

What a long journey it has been. An adventure game that was born in Japan sure goes through a lot of changes on its way to becoming something people overseas can enjoy. Just this once, I hope even those who have never done so will join me in one last yell for today.
Ready?
"Objection!"
