　日本代表が出るような大会(アジア大会の一定以上のレベルなど)では世界のどこで行われても高画質の洗練された画像中継がなされるサッカーは、流石である。Rugbyもアジア太平洋地域の広範囲でそれなりに国際試合が行われている。一方で、サッカーと比較して競技人口が特にアジアでは少ないだけあって、2011年現在でも、牧歌的という点で時々興味深いことがある。もちろん、経済的意味での発展途上国からの国際中継の画質が悪いと言った程度のことは簡単に想定できる。
　例えば、A5N2011においては、ご存じのとおり、アジアでの最高峰のリーグなのであるが、日本-スリランカ戦の中継では、やたらと画面が白い。中継画像が白いので、家庭のテレビの明度調整で克服できる程度ではない。しかも、南国スリランカでの晴天、スリランカ代表のユニフォームが純白であることと相まって、非常に分かりにくく且つ目が疲れる映像であった。加えて、スリランカ代表は、純白のユニフォームで背番号が銀色である。殆ど背番号が判読できない。あまりの分かりにくさに、解説者は｢IRBからユニフォームの色調変更命令が出るのではないか｣といった旨の発言があった。
　PNC2011年大会では、試合時間がかなり曖昧なことがあった。多くの試合が、中継画面表示よりも早く終わるのだ。一応、Actual Timeよりは長かったが、時間管理がかなり怪しい。しかも、最終戦の日本-Fiji戦だけは中継画面表示時刻より長くかかった。不思議である。
　他にも、2011/11/08のFiji-Tonga戦では、中継画面に観客の手が映っていた。どうやら、カメラ前の席の人が頭の上に手を置くと、手が映ってしまうのだ。撮影者用の席周辺の構造について、十分に考えられていないのだ。

18歳.藤田慶和に日本代表の先輩たちが伝えたいこと

　2011年秋のワールドカップ(W杯)ニュージーランド大会を予選プール1分3敗で終えた日本代表は、今年3月19日に2015年のイングランド大会に向け再始動した。
　新たに日本代表のヘッドコーチ(HC)に就任したエディー・ジョーンズは、メンバー選考の際、これまで長くジャパンでプレイした選手や久しぶりに復帰した選手、さらには新たに代表入りする選手など、幅広い年齢層から集めた。その一環として、「これからベストになる選手」、つまり将来の日本代表を背負うかもしれない選手として、藤田慶和(早大)をはじめ4人の大学生も呼ばれた。
　こうした若い選手たちにどう成長してほしいかと問われたジョーンズHCは、「個人によって異なるけど」と言い、こう続けた。「日本の若い選手の課題として、ボールを持っていない時の動きが挙げられます。早くポジショニングを取る、サポートプレイ、タックルした後に次は何をすべきか、などです」
　例えば、「パスをもらえば相手を抜き去る力がある藤田には、プレイにどんどん参加できるよう走りまくって欲しい。相手から球を奪って攻撃機会を増やすため、守備でも身体を張るよう求めたい。代表合宿を通し、サボらない癖をつけるべきだ」と指揮官はこう考えていた。
　そこで、こうした若い選手の手本になる選手として代表に招集されたのが、ジョーンズHCの言う「文化を継承する選手」たちだった。
　筆頭格はロック大野均。ワールドカップには2大会連続で出場し、今年5月には34歳となった。ニックネームは「キンさん」だ。
　4月2日から静岡で始まったチーム初合宿。「世界一のフィットネスとアタックを身に付けなければならない。やることはたくさんある」とジョーンズHCが言うように、過酷な練習が続いた。多くの選手が「タフな毎日だ」とこぼす中、黙々と駆け回っていたのが大野だった。大学を卒業して間もない若手も「10歳以上も上なのに、よく僕たちと同じ練習ができますね」と驚きを隠せなかった。初選出のフッカー有田隆平も、こう感心するのだった。「練習中、一番きついと思うところでキンさんはまだ走っていた」
　フォワードの最年長者として、大野は「年寄り風を吹かせるんじゃなく、若手に負けん気を出して挑んでいく」ことを意識していた。チームを強くするには「キツいことをみんなで一緒にやるのが大事だなと、常々思っています」。特別な言動で積極的に引っ張るわけではない大野の普段の姿勢から、周りの選手は多くのことを学んだ。
　同じく普段通りの姿勢で若手に影響を与えていたのが、34歳とチーム最年長のウイング小野澤宏時だ。その小野澤と静岡合宿で同部屋だった藤田はある時、練習前に部屋でストレッチをしている小野澤の姿を見た。「自分の身体の張っているところをちゃんと伸ばして、グラウンドに行ったらすぐに動けるという感じだった。これから長くラグビーをするには、こう(小野澤のように)しないといけないのかなと思いました」
　常に「自己完結できる準備」を心がける小野澤にとっては、いつものように安定したパフォーマンス維持のための準備をしていた過ぎない。しかし、将来は『スーパー15』でのプレイを夢見る藤田にとっては、「さすがプロだな」と思い知らされた瞬間だった。
　私用で合宿から一時離脱することもあった小野澤だが、代表に帯同する際は「無償の愛。持っている情報はみんなにすべて提供する」と話していた。「どういう姿勢、準備が必要かを早く知っていれば、プラスになることも多いので」
　代表では本職のフルバックではなくウイングを務め、不慣れな動きに戸惑うこともあった藤田にしばしば声をかけていた。その小野澤からいい形でパスをもらうためのポジショニング、ランニングコースなどのアドバイスを受けた藤田は、「もっと考えてラグビーをしなきゃいけないな」と感じた。そして5月5日、福岡レベルファイブスタジアムで行なわれたUAE代表とのアジア5カ国対抗の第2戦。背番号11をつけて初の代表戦に挑んだ藤田は、18歳7カ月とテストマッチ出場の史上最年少記録を更新。6つのトライを奪う大活躍を見せた。
　華々しい代表デビューから1週間後、敵地・城南総合運動場での韓国との第3戦はベンチで観戦した。そこで藤田は、小野澤のプレイをこう捉えた。「コミュニケーションを取ったりと、トライに至るプロセスがすばらしかった」
　藤田のいう「コミュニケーション」とは、試合中の具体的な声の掛け合いだ。事実、試合中の小野澤は、定位置の左タッチライン際から細かな指示を常に出している。自分と離れたところにボールがある時でも「自分がボールを欲しいのか、欲しいのであれば、その前に内側の選手がどういう動きをして、自分がどうボールを受けたいのか」といった「情報の伝達」をしていたのだ。
　先輩たちのプレイを目の当たりにした藤田は、力不足を認めつつ悔しさをにじませた。「自分の能力がそこ(レギュラー)に達していないのがわかったので。これからどうすればメンバーに入っていけるかを考えてやっていきたいです。スーパー15を目指したら、ジャパンのレギュラーにもなれる。上を目指したいですね」
　自らも10代で代表入りした経験を持つフルバック五郎丸歩は、「テストマッチはプライドを持ってやらなきゃいけないと、僕も先輩の方から言葉ではなくプレイで教わった。僕も小野澤さん、大野さんから教わったことを若い選手たちに伝えていければと思います」と語る。今回、「文化を継承する選手」たちから多くのことを学んだ藤田をはじめとする若い選手たち。その経験をどのように生かしていくのか。今後、日本代表の注目ポイントのひとつとなりそうだ。

3.1. Tonga suffer heartbreak against Japan in PNC

(IRB.COM) Sunday 27 June 2010
Japan inflicted more heartbreak on Tonga in their final match of the ANZ PNC 2010. Japan scored a last minute penalty try to record a 26-23 victory over Tonga in the penultimate ANZ Pacific Nations Cup 2010 match.
Having lost 24-23 to Samoa in the opening round and 41-38 to Fiji last week the defeat was heartbreak for Tonga as they could only record their third losing bonus point of the tournament.
Japan did not gain the try scoring bonus point they required to stand any chance of winning the PNC title for the first time, however, meaning the winner would come from the final match of the tournament between Fiji and Samoa.
Despite not being in contention for the title themselves at the beginning of the match, Tonga scored the first points after just three minutes.
Wing William Helu, playing in just his second match for Tonga, pounced on a loose ball after Japan's Alisi Tupuailai had knocked on, before showing a great turn of pace to dummy his way to the try line.

Kurt Morath added the conversion and a further penalty seven minutes later to give Tonga a 10-0 lead at Apia Park and Japan suffered a further setback when the influential Ryan Nicholas had to be stretchered off.

Fly half James Arlidge scored two penalties for the Asian Five Nations champions before half time, however, to cut the deficit to four points and give John Kirwan's side some momentum for the second half.

As they had in the first half, however, Tonga scored within the opening three minutes of the restart with Morath making the scores 13-6 with his second penalty of the match, but Arlidge immediately hit back wiith his third.

Japan's prop Kensuke Hatakeyama, playing in his 14th test, scored their first try of the match in the 51st minute after several phases of play in the Tongan 22, which Arlidge converted to give Japan the lead for the first time.

Alipate Fatafehi scored a fine individual try in the 67th minute for Tonga to regain the lead after chasing his own kick to score under the posts and give Morath an easy conversion.

Arlidge and Morath exchanged further penalties in the last 10 minutes and at at 23-16 it looked as though Tonga would record their first PNZ 2010 victory but after losing captain Aleki Lutui to the sin bin Japan's scrum took advantage and were finally awarded a penalty try which Arlidge converted to secure the win.

"I had trust in my players and despite when we were down during the game, I kept on challenging the boys to give their best. We are happy about the win but we need to improve in a few areas as we prepare for other matches we play this year and next."

9.1.面白さ

　Rugby観戦の面白さは、人それぞれであろう。サッカーとの比較において、私と非常に類似した意見があったので、引用する。

ラグビーとサッカーの面白差は、手と足の差
　ラグビーとサッカーを見比べると、ラグビーの方が高校、社会人、欧米のリーグ、ワールドカップとどの試合でも楽しめる。一方サッカーは、W杯や欧州リーグ戦は見ごたえがある。しかし、それ以外の試合は、少し面白みが落ちる。高校サッカーやJリーグではタメ息をつく方が多い。
　ボールを扱うときの手と足との精度の差かなと感じた。おそらくボールを動かす精度が上がれば、チームをより戦術的に動かすことができるので、”みられる”試合になる。この精度が落ちると、観る方のタメ息が多くなり、またチーム戦術も壊れて面白く無くなる。
　高校生クラスだと足技が手技に比べて格段に劣ることになるので、このクラスのラグビーとサッカーの面白さに差を感じるのだろうというのが、個人的な結論である。
　スポーツ観戦の醍醐味は、個人技による美しいスーパープレイを見ることもあるだろうが、意図されたチーム戦略や戦術がピタリと決まったときの感動も大きい。
　余談だが、この戦略をより楽しめるようにしたのがアメリカンフットボールであろう。NFLもプレイオフに入り、これからスーパーボウルに向けて一段と面白くなっていく。

　複合的な理由であろうが、当団体の分析によると、最も大きな要因は、この事件ではないかと思われる。

HSBC A5N Champions Japan book place at IRB RWC 2011

Japan qualified for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand with an emphatic 94-5 victory over Hong Kong in the HSBC Asian Five Nations Top Five competition in Tokyo on Saturday.A slick Japanese outfit went on a 14-try rampage in their final game in the qualifying campaign to grab the solitary direct entry for the World Cup given to Asia.
STAR Sports commentator Mike Rehu reckons there’s a touch of Town verses Country in this weekend’s HSBC Asian 5 Nations television game.

In the misty halcyon days of provincial rugby history in New Zealand, there was always an annual Town vs Country clash. It was a day on the local rugby calendar where two completely different playing and cultural styles intersected, both parties viewed each other with a touch of suspicion and that once a year clash brought those differences into focus for all to see.

That’s exactly how the Hong Kong and Kazakhstan game is shaping up this Saturday.

The Kazakhstan team are the country boys, they are a bit rough around the edges, don’t care much for the latest threads and haircuts and they get fit on a diet of rudimentary exercise like lifting heavy farm equipment and wrestling bears.

The Hong Kong lads are the flash Harry Town boys, no strangers to tailors and hair products, don’t mind a glass of wine and they get fit with the latest gymnasium equipment, yoga and exercises that end in –metrics.

And the philosophy of these teams is ingrained in them. The country boys always fancy they have the edge up front, the forwards trundle the ball up into Town’s half where they melt under the physical onslaught, give away easy penalties that the reliable boot of the fullback (stand offs don’t kick for goal in the country, its always the man with 15 on his back!) will slot over. Tries come from forwards emerging from the depths of a ruck or maul preferably with lots of mud involved.

The town lads however will try their best to achieve parity up front and unleash their gifted backs into the fray. Speed, elusiveness and flair see that they will score more tries than the myriad of penalties the doughty country fullback can convert. There’s always an element of showbiz associated with the Town team, and there’s nothing that a Country forward loves more to do than latch onto one of these pretty boys and squash them like a bug.

Last year the Kazakhstan “country” style won through in Almaty, where their physical domination allowed them to boss the game in style, winning 25-6 and sealing their crown as second best team in Asia. The Nomads swarming defence gave Hong Kong no quarter and their chances were literally snuffed out.

How does Hong Kong turn it around? Well half the battle is won for them. This year they have home advantage, and the fast bouncy nature of the Football Club pitch will help them keep the game loose. Against Korea they showed what they could do with ball in hand, but the Koreans were awful that day and Kazakhstan won’t give them that much turned over possession.

Also the visitors are without their big star, Anton ‘the Horse’ Rudoy who scored a hat trick in their first game against the Arabian Gulf, where they were victors 43-28.

There are three other key players Hong Kong must watch, Ildar Abdurazakov the freakish inside centre who also has time to jump in the lineouts, Maxim Lifontov the aforementioned fullback with the prodigious boot and captain Timur Mashurov. He had a relatively quiet season last year and seemed to be struggling with a knee injury. Saturday his team need him to perform some of the dynamic work that Rudoy usually gets involved in.

It’s going to be close, and I think the winner of this game will take second place in the HSBC Asian 5 Nations and keep their chances to go to next year’s World Cup alive.

HSBC A5N 'Top 5' on track for thrilling conclusion

With one foot already in the door, high-flying Japan is confident of sealing its berth at IRB Rugby World Cup 2011 when they take on Hong Kong in their final game of the HSBC Asian Five Nations (HSBC A5N) Top Five competition in Tokyo on Saturday. In the second match of the weekend, Kazakhstan finds itself in the unique position of either finishing as A5N runners-up and entering the cross-continental play-off for RWC 2011 or facing relegation to Division I against Korea.

Kirwan names team for HSBC A5N finale

The Japan team to play Hong Kong on Saturday in the HSBC Asian Five Nations shows three changes and one positional switch from the side that started last week’s 101-7 thumping of Kazakhstan.

Ryu Koliniasi Holani is back at No. 8 after an injury filled 18 months, Alisi Tupuailei is named on the wing and Shinsuke Nakamura starts at tighthead prop as Japan look to finish the A5N off in style and book its spot at next year’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Such is the tight nature of this year’s HSBC Asian 5 Nations Kazakhstan are going into their last game against Korea with the chance to finish second and continue their dream to get to next year’s World Cup. If they can win with aplomb they could go on to Uruguay for a sudden death game. If they lose badly they could plummet to last place and go down to the second tier.

In its last ever international match, the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union (AGRFU) bowed out on a historic note beating Korea 21-19 this evening at The Sevens in Dubai. The win is the Arabian Gulf’s second in its HSBC A5N 2010 campaign after beating Hong Kong in Bahrain two weeks ago, and is the first over Korea in its 17-year history of test match rugby. As a testament to the growth of rugby in west Asia, tonight’s historic match opened with a curtain raiser featuring the first ever test between Jordan and Lebanon. Lebanon won on its HSBC Asian 5 Nations debut 27-8.

　ラグビーの日本代表は4月13日、宮崎市・シーガイアで行っていた1次合宿の練習を打ち上げた。SO山中亮平(21=早大)は、昨年11月に続く2回目の代表合宿で、チームの中にもすっかり溶け込んだ様子。周囲は年上ばかりだが「グラウンドでは遠慮せずにやれるようになった。とても充実して、いい感じです」と、持ち味を発揮できる手応えをつかんでいる。日本代表は5月に11年W杯アジア予選を兼ねたHSBC5カ国対抗を控えており、山中は「行けると思っている。ぜひ出たい」と代表デビューを心待ちにしている。太田治GMも「(デビューは)十分にあり得る。状況判断もよくなってきた」と成長に目を細めていた。

After Hong Kong’s opening round upset of Korea, the Hong Kong XV was itself upended by the Arabian Gulf 16-9 last night at the Bahrain Rugby Football Club in the other match of the weekend. It was the Arabian Gulf’s first ever Top 5 win. Add in Sri Lanka’s upset of Singapore in the Division I championships two weeks ago and the run of results in this year’s HSBC A5N has been solidly against the conventional wisdom. Until today in Kyungsang, South Korea that is, as Japan remained true to form as the dominant force in Asian rugby.

　今年のHSBC A5Nの途中経過は、過去の常識に反するものだた。しかし、慶山(韓国)の試合までの話であった。日本はアジアラグビーの秩序における最有力勢力として位置し続けた。

The two-time HSBC A5N champions Japan started slow as the Koreans came out with a ferocious intent that saw them push the Japanese to the limits of their defence early on. Unfortunately a slow start with the boot from Korean fly-half Yoon, Hee-Soo who missed two of three kickable penalties in the first half prevented the Koreans from generating any early momentum.
Despite its sputtering start, Japan did just enough to distance themselves over the course of the first half to take a 19-3 lead at halftime through tries to hooker Shota Horie, scrumhalf Fumiaki Tanaka and winger Endo. The ever-reliable Ryan Nicholas added two conversions in the first half, and would finish with 8 on the day. Korea’s defence was characteristically strong early on but the side let themselves down through repeated infringements that saw the inevitable sin-binning – this time to Korean scrum-half Park, Wan-Yong in the 37th minute. The resulting man advantage to Japan put paid to Korea’s promising start. By the time Park re-entered the park early in the second half, Japan had extended its lead to 33-3 and would never look back.
In a classic game of two halves, Japan came out firing on all cylinders in the second stanza, paced by a remarkable four more tries by winger Kosuke Endo in the second half, doubling his career try total up to that point. Japan’s Yasunori Nagatomo scored in the 41st minute and from that point on it was virtually one-way traffic as Takashi Kikutani, Hitoshi Ono and Hiroki Yuhara all crossed over. Endo’s quartet in the second half stole the show with tries in the 58th, 68th, 71st and 80th minutes.
Korea managed a try by Chae Jae Young – who plays his rugby in Japan with Toshiba – and a conversion and penalty by Oh Youn Hyung, but the fact that the last Korean penalty came in the closing stages showed that they had run out of ideas.
With their three remaining games in Tokyo, Japan remains on course to be Asia’s automatic entry at next year’s IRB Rugby World Cup where they would be seeded in Pool A alongside the hosts New Zealand, France, Tonga and Canada. But they will need to improve on their opening 40 minutes if they are to fulfil coach John Kirwan’s hopes of winning at least two games next year in New Zealand.
"The first half was not to our level," said Kirwan. "We need to work harder moving forward. But I will take it as a first game and tell the team to start from the second half." Japan now returns home for three matches at the legendary Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo against the Arabian Gulf, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong.
Korea will regroup over a much needed bye week with more intensive preparation that sees a first training session tomorrow (Sunday). Korea is now under threat of relegation after both Hong Kong and the Arabian Gulf secured victories in the opening two weeks, although Hong Kong’s loss to the Gulf 16-9 on Friday has helped the Korean cause. Next up for Korea is a much improved Arabian Gulf in Dubai in two weeks before finishing with what promises to be a gangbuster versus Kazakhstan on May 22nd in Seoul. Next week sees one of the pivotal matches of the entire series as Hong Kong hosts last year’s HSBC A5N runners-up Kazakhstan (kick off 16.00 HKG time; GMT+8.00).

　さらに、4月に発表された51人の2007年度日本代表スコッドに幅を広げた場合、外国出身選手の数は10人に倍増する。もちろん、この日本代表スコッドは、9月に開幕するW杯を目指す集団であり、彼らのうちの何人かは間違いなく4カ月後にフランス、あるいはウェールズのピッチの上で、桜のエンブレムを胸にジャパンの一員として世界と対峙することになる。

ラグビーでの代表規定とは

　ラグビーは外国出身選手に関する代表規定が緩やかな競技である。簡単に言えば、自らの出身地以外の国で代表選手になるチャンスがほかの競技に比べて大きい。
　たとえば、サッカーのW杯でも呂比須ワグナーや、三都主アレサンドロといった外国出身選手が日の丸を背負って活躍したが、サッカーでは、代表選手になるためには当該国の国籍を持っていること(外国出身選手にとっては帰化)が大前提となる。
　それに比べて、ラグビーの場合、以下の3条件のいずれかを満たせば、外国人でもその国のパスポートの取得なしに代表選手になることが可能なのだ
  • 当該国で出生
  • 両親、あるいは祖父母のいずれかが当該国で出生
  • 36カ月間継続して当該国に居住
  • 他国代表チーム(注:1)でプレーした経験を持たないこと。
　つまり、生まれた時点では縁もゆかりもなかったとしても、3年以上継続して日本に住んでいるだけで、過去にほかの国で代表選手になっていなければ、ジャパンの一員として名を連ねることに規定上の問題はなくなるのだ。
サッカー(注:2)をはじめ、多くのパスポート絶対主義をとる競技に比べて、明らかに緩やかな規定と言っていいだろう。

  • 1: 15人制代表、7人制代表、および15人制における準代表に相当するチーム
  • 2: 代表選手登録のため安易に国籍を与える事例が相次いだこともあって、現在では2重国籍所持選手なども21歳までにサッカーにおける国籍を選択することが義務づけられるようになっている。

代表規定の変遷

　クラシック・オールブラックスの一員として久しぶりに日本のファンの前に姿を見せたジェイミー・ジョセフ。99年のW杯では日本代表としてもプレーした【出村謙知】
　先日、来日したクラシック・オールブラックス。実は、基本的にNZ代表OBばかりで構成されていたメンバーの中に元日本代表選手が含まれていた。LO/NO8ジェイミー・ジョセフ。NZ代表として1995年までに20キャップを獲得する一方で、96年から02年まで日本のサニックスに在籍。前述の「3年以上の居住」という条件を満たして、日本代表入りを果たした(日本代表として9キャップを獲得)。そのジョセフが、やはり元NZ代表であるSHグレアム・バショップ(キャップ数はNZ=31、日本=8)とともに日本代表として出場した99年のW杯は、各代表における外国人選手の存在が大きくクローズアップされる大会となった。
　ジョセフ、バショップが日本代表に加わったのと同様に、開催国だったウェールズにもFBシェーン・ハワースという元NZ代表選手がいた。ハワースは3年居住条件を満たしていなかったが、「祖父母がウェールズ出身」とされていた。ところが、後にハワースにはウェールズ出身の祖父母などいなかったことが判明。その一方で、ジョセフ、バショップは「3年居住条件」を満たしていたものの、本物のオールブラックスを起用したジャパンは“チェリー・ブラックス"(日本代表のシンボルである桜とオールブラックスをつなげた造語)と揶揄(やゆ)されもした。
　そうした事態を重くみたIRB(国際ラグビーボード)は00年に代表規定を変更し、現在では一度どこかの国の代表チームでプレーした選手は、ほかの国の代表にはなれなくなっている。例えばかつては、怪物WTBジョナ・ロムーであっても、日本に3年以上住んだ後にジャパンの一員に加わることには代表規定上は問題なかったのだが、00年以降はその可能性は閉ざされることになった。

世界中にいる“外国人"代表選手

　PNCの日本代表スコッドに選ばれたグレン・マーシュの双子の兄弟であるトニー・マーシュは03年W杯ではフランス代表としてプレーした【出村謙知 】
　「最強のジャパンをつくるために、日本代表としてプレーできる可能性のある選手すべてが選考対象となる」これがジョン・カーワン日本代表HCの基本的な考えだ。資格を満たしている以上、外国出身選手でもジャパンの戦力として考えていく――W杯での勝利を求められる代表指揮官としては、当然の方向性とも言えるだろう。そして、それは日本や前述したウェールズに限って見られる傾向ではなく、世界中の代表チームでごく普通に取られている方針でもある。たとえば、今回のPNCで日本代表スコッドに加わることになったNZ出身のFLグレン・マーシュにはトニーという双子の兄弟がいるが、そのトニー・マーシュはすでにフランス代表として21キャップを獲得。03年のW杯でもプレーしている。
　この例でも分かるように、自らの祖国以外の代表になるのは“王国"NZ出身のプレーヤーが多い。PNCにおける日本代表スコッドに含まれる5人の外国出身選手でも、そのうち4人がNZ人である。その一方で、過去すべての国にテストマッチで勝ち越しているNZ代表でも、多くの外国出身選手が活躍してきた。現役オールブラックスを例にとっても、ロムーに代わって漆黒のジャージの11番をまとっているWTBジョー・ロコゾコはフィジー出身だ。

桜色のプライド

　歴史的にみて、代表規定の緩さはラグビーがはぐくんできた文化の一つと言っていいものだった。ラグビーは、同国内にイングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズ、アイルランドという4つの異なる代表を選出する協会を抱える英国生まれであり、かつ長らくアマチュアリズムを堅守してきた特殊性を持つ競技。だからこそ、代表規定に関しても独自路線が取られてきたのだ。
　たとえば、イングランド地域内に住むウェールズ人ファミリーの一員がラグビーの代表選手になる場合、どの代表チームを選ぶのか? あるいは、イングランドに住むスコットランド人とアイルランド人のカップルから生まれたラグビー選手の場合は?国籍が介在し得ないだけに、尊重されてきた民族としてのプライドとブラッド。それが、アマチュア時代が長かったラグビーの代表規定の緩さの背景にあるのだ。
　現在、日本代表スコッドに加わっている外国出身選手に、日本人につながるブラッドをたどることは不可能だろう。
　ただし、プライドの方は誰に聞いても「日本代表に選ばれたことを誇りに思う」という答えが返ってくるように、気持ちの部分では桜色に染まっていると考えたい。クラシック・オールブラックス戦に出場した際、CTBブライスから感じた気迫は、ほかの日本人選手と比較しても特筆すべきものだった。それは、間違いなくジャパンとして戦うことにプライドを持っていたからこそのパフォーマンスだっただろう。
　いつの時代にも、代表チームに外国出身選手が加わることには賛否両論がある。それでも、単純な国籍主義ではなく、プライドとブラッドを重んじた代表チーム同士の対戦を楽しんできた歴史がラグビー界にあるのも事実。ファンにとっては、より多彩な顔ぶれの代表チームをサポートできる楽しみさえあると言ったら、言い過ぎだろうか。少なくとも、出身地に関係なく、現在のカーワン・ジャパンに加わっているのが「世界一速い、日本独自のラグビー」(カーワンHC)をつくり上げるのに適した選手たちであることは間違いない。

11. 国内高等学校女子

　2011/06/20現在における高校女子ラグビー部が存在するのは以下2校のみである。

11.2. 高校女子大会創設

　日本ラグビー協会は20日、高校女子の大会創設を発表した。来夏、長野県の菅平高原で第1回大会を行う。2016年のリオデジャネイロ五輪から7人制ラグビーが男女ともに行われるため、女子競技人口を若年層で拡大させる狙い。30日に記者会見を開く。日本協会によると、現在登録している高校の女子ラグビー部は全国に2校だけだが、登録選手は男子と一緒に練習している選手を合わせると約150人がいるという。

11.3. 女子ラグビー入部希望者7人合格: 石見智翠館高

　石見智翠館高校(江津市渡津町)の合格発表が14日あり、同校が昨年4月に創部した7人制女子ラグビー部への入部希望者が7人合格したことが同校への取材で分かった。入部希望合格者の出身地内訳は島根県1人、神奈川県2人、大阪府3人、京都府1人。現在の部員は5人で、同部の磯谷竜也監督は「試合形式の練習ができるなど期待感は大きい」と話している。

11.4. 高校女子ラグビー 八西から2選手

　埼玉県の熊谷ラグビー場で30日に開幕する全国高校選抜ラグビー大会の女子セブンズ(7人制)の部に、八戸西ラグビー部所属の田端みのり選手(2年)と田端麻衣選手(1年)が、東北・北信越ブロック選抜チームのメンバーとして出場する。同大会には八戸西男子がチャレンジ枠で出場。2人は本番に向け、男子部員に交じって熱のこもった練習に取り組んでいる。
　女子セブンズは、2016年リオデジャネイロ五輪から正式種目となるラグビー女子の強化のため新設された。参加を希望した全国の高校・クラブが単独または合同チームで、ブロックごとに9チームが出場。八戸西の2選手はクラブチームの秋田ノーザンブレッツと岩手、宮城、新潟の高校所属選手でつくる合同チームに参加する。試合は4月5日、3チームずつ3組で行う総当たりの予選リーグと、各組の同順位チームによる総当たりの決勝リーグを行う。
　田端みのり選手は小学2年から八戸市の八戸少年ラグビースクールでラグビーを始め、同市の女子クラブチーム・八戸レディースで社会人らに交じってプレー。「同じ高校生女子選手と試合ができる数少ない機会。楽しんでプレーしたい」と闘志を燃やす。高校入学後にラグビーを始めた田端麻衣選手は公式戦初出場とあって「不安はあるけれど、楽しみでもある。活躍できるよう頑張りたい」と表情を引き締めていた。
　日本ラグビー協会によると、協会に登録する県内の高校生女子選手は現在、9人となっている。
